That's what NBN did, with a waterproof GoPro in hand. Staff members came together to capture moments underwater, swimming below the surface of SPAC's pool and jumping themselves into Lake Michigan.
This project was made possible by the NBN Alumni Special Features Grant*, which was funded by the generous donations of NBN alumni. Dive in and submerge yourself with the stories below.
On a rare sunny afternoon, the NBN photo team went on a field trip to the beach to play with the new GoPro. Check out the images they gathered by sticking the camera under water.
Practicing in the off season, Northwestern Women's Swimming and Diving finished the 2014-2015 season placing 10th at the Big Bend Championship back in February. Over the course of the season, the team made the cuts for "B" NCAA qualifying standards in eight events. At the TYR Invitational in Evanston, the team also set a new Norris Aquatics Center 400 medley relay pool record of 3:41.95, erasing Stanford's 17-year-old record of 3:43.10 from 1997. The team also established new pool records in the 200 fly, 100 free and 400 free relay.
The small, mostly underclassman diving team practices five days a week at SPAC. They take turns practicing their dives while diving coach Alik Sarkisian shouts instructions from the side of the pool. When the divers struggle to learn a particular dive, Sarkisian has them wear a harness which slows down the dive, allowing them to practice the form in slow motion.
When you're napping by the Lakefill, Lake Michigan is often dotted with sailboats, paddleboats and kayaks. Here's what the lake looks like on the water.
