Willard Residential College at 1835 Hinman

1835 Hinman Avenue

Located on South Campus near downtown Evanston, Willard's original location in the sorority quad is under renovation during the 2016-17 school year. With that, the residential college community affectionately known as "Wooshack" will be moved to the 1835 Hinman building while repairs are made to the old building. The community, once home to Stephen Colbert and Julia Louis-Dreyfus, will pick up in its new home, including Fran's Cafe, which will serve as the late-night dining location for South Campus residents this year. Hinman’s five stories give an almost clear view of Lake Michigan. The two lounges on the first floor equipped with a TV, billiards table, piano and a multitude of seating areas heighten Hinman’s cozy feel. Hinman’s suite-style living arrangements add to its homey atmosphere with a lounge and bathroom per six rooms and two kitchens per floor.

What residents say

“I've decided to live in Hinman twice in my time at Northwestern because of the people. While the facilities aren't the nicest, I think Hinman creates an awesome community. The lounges every few rooms connects people much better than a building with only one or two lounges, or potentially even none. Having a dining hall and C-Store is great during the freezing winter, and it's close to downtown and many South Campus buildings. Overall, Hinman was one of the best decisions I made.”

Jacob Jones, Weinberg junior

“The best thing about it is the lake view. It’s also got a nice dining hall, which is a good option especially in the winter, when you might not want to leave your dorm. There’s a fire alarm that goes off every now and then, so at least you know that it’s safe.”

John Hruska, Weinberg freshman

“Hinman’s not the nicest dorm in terms of amenities. The kitchenettes aren’t that usable, the rooms are smaller than others – it’s got a dining hall though, so that’s pretty great. If you’re a Bienen or Medill student, it’s amazing, since you can see your classes from your room. It’s that close. The lounges are really nice, since they’re a great place to do homework, or play games with friends.”

Nate Pham, Weinberg and Bienen sophomore

“I have a roof over my head and a dining hall in the same building – I mean, that’s all I can really ask for.”

Nathaniel Speiser, Weinberg sophomore
