If you have a passion for the arts – be it performance, design or even just a general appreciation – Jones Residential College is the place for you. A community of diverse, creative individuals, Jones provides a welcome atmosphere unlike any other. Popular traditions include performance hour, weekly munchies and SUMO, a notorious secret known only to residents. With eight practice rooms, studios for art, music and dance production, a dark room, study den and a brand new exercise room, Jones has something for everyone. Yet the crown jewel of Jones is the Great Room – a dedicated performance space for residents and student groups. All performances in this space are free for Jones residents. Located on the southernmost tip of campus, Jones is home to mostly freshman and sophomore students and is conveniently located near many Weinberg, Medill and School of Communication buildings.
“Obviously Jones isn’t the biggest or most modern dorm on campus, but that’s not the reason that you choose to live in Jones. The people and community are what make this dorm so special--it almost seems wrong to call it a dorm considering how much more it is.”
Anna Backer, School of Communication freshman
“Jones is an old building, which comes with some side effects, mainly heating issues. Sometimes rooms are warmer or colder than you might prefer, and this can be a bummer, but usually not something that a window fan or sweatshirt can't solve. Rooms are small, but most time is spent in the newly furnished suites and other common areas.”
Rachel Stamler-Jonas, School of Communication freshman
“It can get annoying to walk to Tech from Jones frequently, but the location is great for going into downtown Evanston. I can quickly go to CVS or Whole Foods, or go out to eat. It's a little far from on-campus restaurants, but is a good distance from the library and Norris.”
Megana Audipudy, McCormick sophomore
“The community that Jones creates is amazing. Not only do the other students here come with a welcoming mindset but Jones also works to develop opportunities where the residents can mingle. I have heard that my room is on the larger end of the scale. With that in mind, I don’t have any problem with the room size. While they are cozy they fit everything perfectly.”
Stephanie Trejo, Weinberg freshman
“I love the creative environment that Jones fosters. I can express myself here without fear of judgment and know that there's a community who shares my interests.”
Hunter Hanson, Bienen Freshman
“Jones has a lot of character and lots of passionate, artistic people living there. The room sizes are a bit small but the suites seem really sociable. The Great Room is also amazing!”
Christine Schlaug, Weinberg freshman
“Jones is a place where artists can be just that, and there is a level of bonding that I, even as a person who doesn't live there, have witnessed. Everyone is simply comfortable in their own skin. There is an enormous amount of support toward every aspect of art that is admirable.”
Chamaya Moody, Communication freshman
“Everything I've heard about Jones that its gets a lot of returning people even though the rooms aren’t the biggest or the nicest, but because everyone loves the community and atmosphere, with perf hour and all the other events that get organized.”
Trent Cwiok, Weinberg freshman
