East Fairchild (Communications Residential College)

1855 Sheridan Road

Located in the heart of South Campus academic buildings, East Fairchild, also known as the Communications Residential College, is a smaller dorm home to budding screenwriters, vigilant journalists and dedicated engineers alike. With four lounges on every floor, residents are hard-pressed to choose where to do their homework or talk with friends. For a break from the schoolwork grind, students flock to one of the two screening rooms, the in-house exercise room or the main lounge to forge lasting friendships with other residents. Many students say they feel instantly immersed in a tight-knit community by participating in secret traditions from day one. Want more information about these classified events? What residents say

“Living in CRC was the best decision I made in my whole freshman year and I’m living in CRC next year. The living quality is not… bad. It’s just not super fancy compared to other places, but the social life is really good. I knew coming into CRC that was a tradeoff I was willing to make. We don’t have fancy amenities but we have fancy people.”

Chelsea Hammersmith, Weinberg freshman

“If you are a student who has primarily classes on South Campus, you can’t beat this location. I think it’s fantastic even if you’re not RTVF, Medill, or Theatre because you get exposed to people who are different majors from you, and we’re right next to Downtown Evanston and the Evanston Beach.”

Kayla Griffith, School of Communication sophomore

“My favorite thing about CRC is the sense of community. We’re not too large or too small – about 100 people. We have four suites on every floor that let us hang out or ‘do our homework.' We have a lot of cool events and outings in CRC, and I think I have gotten really close with most of the people. We also have a big screening room and a tiny screening room where we play video games, watch movies, have events – it’s really cool.”

Robert Cunningham, School of Communication freshman

“There are lot of activities. The meetings and events aren’t required, but a lot of people go to them and you can find community if you look for it. I think this building would work for anyone, but since it’s a Communications Residential College there are definitely a lot of RTVF and journalism students.”

Jacob Stern, School of Communication freshman

What non-residents say

“CRC is dope. The community draws me here. I'm not crazy about the room size, but the people and the creativity of the people are what draw me here. We stay up all night jamming. Sometimes I have to remind myself to go home to Hinman.”

Lauren Harris, Medill freshman

“I like the lounges. The common areas are great for studying. I live in Hobart House and there's only a lounge on the first floor, so there's not as much lounge space. It's really nice for me to come here to study with my friends.”

Zimin Zeng, Weinberg freshman

“I have never been to CRC, but I know people that live there and I've heard pretty good things. I haven't heard of anyone who hates it, but I also haven't heard of anyone who is absolutely in love.”

Lucero Flores, Weinberg freshman

“I think CRC is one of the smaller, older dorms with not-so-nice facilities, but on the other hand, I feel like it has a really nice community there. A lot of my friends made best friends there... and also I think the layout of the building is pretty good for making friends.”

Vickie Li, McCormick freshman
