College of Cultural and Community Studies

2303 Sheridan Road

As the smallest and oldest residential college on campus, the College of Cultural and Community Studies (CCS) boasts eclectic, vaguely Ikea-inspired interior design, close-knit community and collective interest in cultural exploration, on campus and beyond. Although located on North Campus, CCS is home to students of diverse majors and backgrounds. Regular firesides and excursions into cultural neighborhoods like Pilsen and Argyle connect residents to Faculty Fellows and Master Staff, while quirky traditions like Secret Satan – where residents steal each others’ clothes before Halloween – and Service Auction – where residents sell their goods, services, companionship and more for charity – bring together residents for inter-RC fun and festivities.

What residents say

“It’s definitely the most underrated dorm on this campus. It has the trifecta – amazing people, really nice amenities and great location, especially if you’re into sciences. It’s like a 3 minute walk from my room to my seat in Tech.”

Sydni White, Weinberg freshman

“Room size and location are phenomenal. It makes taking an 8 am at Tech manageable. In terms of social life, it’s good if you want to slowly acclimate to the college lifestyle. It’s chill, low key, no one’s shitting on the lobby floor, no one’s banging on the bathroom floor.”

Henry Castellani, Weinberg freshman

“What I love about CCS is that everyone knows each other. People just hang out in the lounge; you’ll always find someone there. People go out, but there is generally not a lot of nightlife happening in the dorm. We’re in the frat quad so you can definitely go out if you want. We do share a building with Green House, and I like the people in Green House, but it is a little weird having that separate community in the shared space.”

Emily McKinnon, McCormick freshman

“The rooms are really nice, and the bathrooms are really nice – especially the showers. I don’t really hang out in the dorm but I think it’s really active and people really enjoy the community here. As an engineer it’s prime location to get to Tech. It’s definitely one of the nicer dorms on campus.”

Jesse Vega-Perkins, McCormick sophomore

“It’s a very nice dorm, aesthetic-wise. The location is great if you are an engineer or some Comm majors. As for proximity to social events or downtown Evanston, it’s at the least an 8-minute walk. Social life-wise, the people are really friendly. The smaller dorm is naturally quieter, which is a positive in the sense that you can always expect to come back to a relative serenity – you’re not going to come back and just have vomit in the hallway. I feel like our theme means well – we go out to cultural neighborhoods once in a while – but there aren’t a whole lot of cultural events here that other dorms don’t hold.”

Michael Aronson, McCormick sophomore

“Downside: it is pretty far from Medill and downtown Evanston. Upside: because it’s really small, it’s more close-knit than other res colleges. Everyone is very motivated and passionate - a couple people here have even started their own clubs. There are a lot of diverse people, and everyone is really weird, but I’m weird, so it works. Also, the lounge is very chic – it’s a little Ikea meets the Cosby show.”

Rachel Yang, Medill freshman

What non-residents say

“I think it’s quiet, but it’s a good quiet – everybody I’ve ever met from CCS is super friendly and the place is beautiful. I pretend like I live here.”

Michelle Sanders, SESP/Weinberg freshman

“I think you get people from a variety of backgrounds, which is really cool. The atmosphere is very, very nice. People will be in the lounge studying during the day so you can feed off that vibe.”

Hector Macias, Weinberg freshman

“[CCS] seems really cool. There’s only like 26 people in it, right? I don’t know anyone living there, but the concept of living with 26 people seems really fun.”

Alex Marichal, Weinberg senior
