Sitting on the corner of Hinman and Sheridan, this residence hall is considered prime real estate for journalism majors and Bienen students alike – or anyone who would like to spend time on South Beach or Andy’s Frozen Custard. Hinman’s five stories give an almost clear view of Lake Michigan. Home to a dining hall and c-store makes living in Hinman especially bearable during the winter months when you will take any given reason not to go outside. The two lounges on the first floor equipped with a TV, billiards table, piano and a multitude of seating areas heighten Hinman’s cozy feel. Hinman’s suite-style living arrangements add to its homey atmosphere with a lounge and bathroom per six rooms and two kitchens per floor. The floors are also mix-gendered, with an option of substance-free or interfaith living on the fifth floor. The basement is another great option for lounging or studying with its TV, free printer and vending machines. Although home to mostly freshmen and sophomores, Hinman is open to all students who choose to live on campus.
“The worst thing about Hinman is the laundry room, which is intolerably hot. The best thing is the dining hall, even though it sucks. Because, hey, who doesn’t love food?”
Tim Balk, Medill freshman
“I hate when people play their music really loud or walk down the hallways playing music without using headphones. I’d give it a 2/10 on Yelp.”
Arianna Mihalakakos, Communication freshman
“It’s as good as the people who live on the floor and it has a dining hall. But it’s definitely not one of the best dorms.”
Katarina Weber, Medill freshman
“I like Hinman, two thumbs up! I’m going to live here next year because I like the lounge layout. If I lived in a different dorm it may be more difficult to make friends and to get work done.”
Sophie Sisson, McCormick freshman
“I like the lounges because the lounges in my dorm [Hobart House] are inconvenient, I don’t even know some of the people who live in my hall. Here I’ll see people passing through and know who they are and where they live.”
Ellen Zhao, McCormick freshman
“It’s not necessarily a top choice dorm, but among the south campus dorms it’s a decent option if you want a large-ish dorm and can’t get in to Allison. One of the main selling points I’d say is that it has an attached dining hall, which is way more convenient than a lot of people realize.”
Elizabeth Summers, Medill sophomore
“Hinman is really south and I’ve never eaten there to be honest.”
Marc Malinowski, McCormick junior
